heroes

2006, 8-channel installation, loop, SD NTSC

“Heroes” shows – on 8 monitors – portraits of actors in scenes taken from various films. At first glance they seem to be freeze frames. But the faces are vibrating, as if “electrified”. They seem to be subjected to some kind of internal or external violence which can hardly be controlled. The heroes are trapped in a clip and can neither proceed nor retreat within the film sequence. The monitors in the room are placed so as to suggest relationships between the individual men. Feelings such as aggression, fear and resignation form a net in which the “Heroes” are entangled. Just as with the images, the sound, too, makes no progress. The music comes from original film scores and suggests tension, announcing a dramatic event that is about to take place. In the end, however, the tension will never be broken because nothing will ever happen.
